A Brief Insight Within the Realm of Movie Theaters

A Brief Insight Within the Realm of Movie Theaters

People have been going out to the theater to see movies for decades. It is a novel idea that has appeared to stand the tests of time even as our methodology of conducting our everyday lives has changed drastically, the urge to go to the movie theater is still very present. As an employee for a corporate movie theater I have witnessed numerous instances; instances that many do not even truly begin to acknowledge consciously when they make a decision to enjoy a film at the theater. There are indeed some marketing schemes at play when you attend a show at the movie theater, I will discuss some of these. I will also cover some usual quirks that occur when you are an employee at a highly trafficked movie theater.

Many people are under the impression that the movie theater industry is just some big bad monster in coercion with Hollywood to suck your wallet dry or to fill you with some poisonous notions of what life should be like. This impression is not entirely false, perhaps it is lacking some of the malicious intent that people may associate with this industry but in reality – business is business. If you have ever worked at a movie theater you will know that there are time frames during the day that are very busy and moments where there are no customers walking through the doors. Most movie start times are during what we at the theater call a “set,” this is the time frame, usually about an hour or so, where almost all the movies that the theater offers begins. A marketing technique we employ at the theater is to appeal to the customer’s sense of smell. Whenever a set is starting and we know customers will be walking through the door we have a fresh batch of popcorn being popped, this is a tactic that works very well. Another marketing technique that we have used at the theater is to play an ad right before the show begins. This ad typically features a refreshing and bubbly soda being poured and enjoyed along with clips of kernels being popped into fresh popcorn, this appetizing display of the timeless treats that are offered at the theater can almost infallibly bring some extra sales of concession items.

As a general consumer you may not be able to understand why a theater conducts business a certain way, why a theater is showing these specific movies and not others, or even why your movie is located in a specific auditorium. There are various aspects that may appear to be idiosyncratic but actually have viable reasons behind them. Business at a corporate movie theater is just that, business; so business is conducted in a manner cohesive with the goals of making the most money possible while keeping a majority of the customers satisfied. The theater does not get to pick and choose which movies we will receive, since this is not a ‘mom-n-pop’ business we only receive the movies that the corporate man has said we will show; even if we know there is a population that would likely enjoy having access to certain independent films. We even have agreements where certain films are required to be showing in X amount of theaters at a time, along with specified platforms. Something that we do have control over is the size of the auditorium we choose to show the film in. There are varying sizes of auditoriums at the movie theater anywhere from about 100 seats to about 400 seats in my particular theater. We attempt to appropriately allocate the amount of customers we anticipate to attend the film along with the theaters capabilities to house all these people.

Although mediums have changed immensely for viewing films within the past decade, the movie theater industry is still thriving fairly well. The experience is still one that many people value, deeming that this form cinematic submersion is well worth the price. Even though I was only able to shed some light briefly on the inner workings of how a corporate movie theater conducts business and the manner at which decisions are made, I hope this has brought some insight to the movie theater industry.

Interstellar: An Epic Story With a Crisp Cinematography

Interstellar: An Epic Story With a Crisp Cinematography

Massive and spectacular are the two words that describe a movie like Interstellar. Being an avid Christopher Nolan fan, I was spellbound when I saw this movie. Nolan is famous for his out of the box creativity. Interstellar is one such journey that the viewer can take sitting at a place. Unimaginable shooting destinations, Nolan surprises us with his brilliance in using surroundings as an advantage. The narrative is progressive and has a slow pace. The music is by Hans Zimmer; another creative genius who has given music for every minute of emotion that is on the onscreen.

It starts with a story of a man named Cooper. An ex-NASA pilot striving hard to survive the post 21st-century era; who brings us hope and inspires us to dream of a future. Unaware of the circumstances, there is a little girl named Murf, who loves her daddy more than anything. Cooper’s family consists of his daughter, son, and father-in-law. Murf is the centre for Cooper’s journey in the movie. She complains to him that there is a ghost in her closet who keeps pushing an artefact. After several complaints, Cooper checks the dust in Murf’s room and discovers that it is gravity. This phenomenon actually symbolizes a pattern of binary code as coordinates to a location of NASA’s underground facility. Following the coordinates, Cooper and Murf reach to the facility.

They meet Dr. Brand, who is the in charge of the facility and was the professor of Cooper. Luckily he meets the entire team of NASA. There he discovers the mission of NASA; to look for traces of planets which can sustain human life with water, food, sunlight and breathable air. Cooper questions the existence of such a planet and is the reason put by the scientists that they have found a way to check if such a planet exists. Dr. Brand addresses that there is a wormhole which mysteriously surfaced 48 years ago which allows us to enter a different galaxy probable to sustain life. There are two plans: A & B. Plan A is that they look for galaxies that can sustain human life and a massive exodus. Plan B is that the Endurance ship carries 5000 frozen embryos which can be sent to the habitable planet to colonize further in future. Cooper takes us on an exciting journey with scientific facts to support every kind of theory.

The cinematography of Interstellar is one that is much applauded. There was a use of computer-generated imagery. That means every scene of the movie was actually a location. For example Sv√≠nafellsj√∂kull glacier in Iceland was used as a filming location for Interstellar, doubling for Mann’s planet. Nolan used IMAX cameras which are motion picture film format and is a guideline for developing cinematography.

The Media: Are Films Better Than The Mainstream Media When It Comes To Conditioning People?

The Media: Are Films Better Than The Mainstream Media When It Comes To Conditioning People?

For quite some time now, there has been one source that people look towards to be informed and another when they want to be entertained. This is not to say that someone thinks about one of these sources when they want to be informed/entertained, as it is likely to be something that just happens.

Over The Years

There is the chance that one has been exposed to these sources from a very young age, and this is why they want need to consciously think about them. Instead, they can simply look into what is taking place in the world, or see what films are out, for instance.

If, on the other hand, they needed to think about how they can find out what is taking place or how they can amuse themselves, they would need to use more energy. Once one of these needs arises, they can soon come into contact with what they desire.

One Experience

This could mean that one spends about as much time learning about what is taking place in the world as they do being distracted from it. In this case, one could have a reasonable understanding when it comes to what is going on, and when it comes to films, they might be fairly up to date.

One way of looking at this would be to say that they have a fairly balanced approach to it all. Therefore, if someone was to talk about something that has just taken place or a film that has just come out, they might be able to have a conversation with them.

Another Way

Alternatively, one could be in a position where they have the tendency to focus more on what is going on around them. They might watch films from time to time, but that could be as far as it goes.

Yet, if this is not how they experience life, it could show that they spend more time watching films. When it comes to what is taking place in the world, it could be seen as something they haven’t got time for.

The Odd Occasion

At the same time, even if one experienced life in this way, it doesn’t mean that they will always behave in this way. There could be moments when they will take a step back from what they would usually do.

For example, if they are going through a tough time, they might feel the need to watch more films; this can then be a way to deal with the pain/stress that they are experiencing. If something catastrophic is taking place in the world, it could cause them to sit up and take notice, and to forget about being entertained for a little while.

Omnipresent

When it comes to the technology that is available in today’s world, it is not going to be difficult for one to fulfil these two needs. The only thing they will need in order for this to take place will be to have some kind of device.

Through going online with a Smartphone/tablet, they will be able to find all the news they desire and as much entertainment as they can handle. Some of this will be free, and there can be times when they will have to pay.

Two Sides

On one side, there is going to be how this benefits the average person; With them no longer having to put in as much effort to come into contact with what they need. A lot of the time they would have spent looking for the news or going to buy a DVD, for instance, can now be used in other ways.

And on the other side, there is going to be the effect this has on the mainstream media and the film companies. The first source no longer needs people to come to them; they can deliver the news to them directly.

Online

This can take through posting articles on social media, and so as long as someone ‘likes’ or ‘follows’ them, they will be able to stay up to date. Or, they can simply go onto a search engine and find out that way.

When it comes to entertainment, one can join a website that will allow them to watch a film or a series whenever they want to. It is then going to be possible for them to get their productions right in front of people.

Direct Access

In the past, the primary way for these sources to gain people’s attention was for them to watch TV. This gave the people behind these sources a lot of control over people, and it could be said that the latest technology has given them even more.

However, although the mainstream media defined how people saw the world in the past, this is no longer the case. For one thing, they can now look towards the alternative media, and this has taken a lot of their power away.

Its Over

When it came to what this source of information said in the past, it would have been difficult for people to know if it was true or not. Nowadays, they can look towards other sources to see if there is more to it.

Through being able to do this, it has been shown that the mainstream media don’t simply exist to inform people. It might be more accurate to say that their main purpose is to condition people to see the world in a certain way.

It’s not over

Even so, while the mainstream media no longer has the same amount of control as it used to have, the same can’t be said when it comes to entertainment industry. It can be normal for someone to be critical of what they hear from the mainstream media, but when they watch something they can simply take it all in.

But if they believe that films are only made to entertain people, there is going to be no reason for them to take a step back. Thus, when it comes to conditioning people, it could be said that films are going to be the best option.

Conclusion

Now, clearly there are lot of people who no longer listen to the mainstream media, but there are still plenty of people who do. And while there is an alternative when it comes to being informed, the same can’t be said when it comes to being entertainment.

After a hard day at work, one can end up sitting back and allowing everything they see to enter their mind. On the surface, they can be watching something that has been created to entertain them, but at a deeper level, there can be far more to it.

Movie Review of ‘South Side With Me’

Movie Review of ‘South Side With Me’

I was so pleasantly delighted to watch a romance movie without people taking off their clothes. The movie, ‘South Side With Me’ was about when our current president and his wife met. Barack and Michelle Obama were portrayed gracefully as two intelligent, caring people of color.

So many movies portray people as not being capable of manners or restraint. This one had real thought put into it. The topics discussed had substance.

Regardless of political views, I believe Mr. And Mrs. Obama are good people. I believe most politicians initially began with a passion for their communities and wanting to make a difference. It’s never too late to give back to the place you came from.

One scene was set at a housing community disgruntled about being rejected on a proposal. The character gave a speech that I loved. He helped them understand how to turn a disappointment into a possibility. The actor had Mr. Obama’s mannerisms and way of talking perfected. It sounded just like the man himself.

Michelle has always been a very classy woman. The movie only focused on their first date and did not go into the years that followed. This was actually a nice effect because it held my attention for a full hour and a half. I didn’t have to see trash thrown in for lack of good writing as in most movies we see today.

I didn’t vote for Mr. Obama as President and didn’t like the health care reform but I am glad we had our first colored President and am sure we will see our first woman President soon. I do believe he is a good speaker and role model. I am glad there haven’t been any marital unfaithfulness scandals as we’ve seen with others in the past. It’s good to see a couple who love each other.

The one quality I’d like to see during my lifetime is a true return to Christian values in a President and that person not being mocked for it. I may never see that again.

In spite of any of our country’s shortcomings, we are still blessed to live in a democracy. People died for the liberties we enjoy today. Before we criticize our leaders or government, we must be willing to vote and participate in our local communities. We must show our young people how to contribute to the betterment of society. I do give our President and his wife credit for that. I give this movie a wonderful rating.
